)s, other big costs. jake tapper and jon karl have been tracking it. >> reporter: last night after their prime time addresses to house speaker john boehner was overheard saying he didn't sign up to go mano a mano with the president after the president called for congress to compromise. the president spoke sternly to the american people last night blaming house republicans, especially freshmen, for holding up a debt deal. >> the only reason this balanced approach isn't on its way to becoming law right now is because a significant number of republicans in congress are insisting on a different approach. >> reporter: house speaker john boehner responded that the president wants to continue his rampant spending. >> the president often said we need a balanced approach, which in washington means, we spend more and you pay more. >> reporter: right now there are two competing bills, to raise the debt ceiling and reduce the deficit. a house one that likely cannot pass the senate and a senate one that cannot likely pass the house. both cut more than $1 trillion in spending and do not raise ta
are kind of in suspended animation until speaker boehner acts on this bill today but i think one of the big problems you face is that once he does send -- get this through, if he does get it through, it's going to be very hard to get any of his republicans to vote for the real compromise in a day or two or three. >> reporter: well, that's exactly right. both of your points right. first of all there are no negotiations going on in that compromise right now because all the focus is getting this passed in the house. speaker boehner isn't exactly taking calls from democrats but trying to get his own republicans in line. once he does this, this is going to be very difficult for him to get -- to go any further by way of compromise. if there is a compromise it's going to take a lot of democrats to pass it in the house. >> a lot of democrat, that's exactly right. key market openings sunday night, the next big deadline to watch for, as well. >> that's right. >> the asian market. >> elizabeth, this is just so uncertain going into the final weekend. >> well, and certainly the public is starting to los
's not going to be the big oblem. when you start lying to the prosecutors about what happened in this incident, i don't see how they c c move forward. >> robin, i want to bring you in. do you agree with dan and think this case can move towards a dismissal now? >> well, there is no choice, unfortunately, but this case to move towards dismissal. the problem is this case stinks all around. while this victim did lie and i agree with dan completely that the fact that there may have been lies that were about applications and asylummut when it becomes about the crime itself it's a problem but i blame the prosecutors for not building a rapport to get this out in the beginning. the lack of transparency about the relationship between the third in command with the office is a problem. something stinks in the case. doesn't change the fact this guy has three prior victims and now this person is also claiming the same sort of sexual abuse, it's a shame for victims everywhere. >> robin, as a prosecutor, if you felt the way you do, as you just laid it out, and you get a victim like this whose credibility is r
the debt ceiling and republicans are saying that there's not just enough time to work out a big deal. there's a heightened sense of urgency in washington to come up with a deal to raise the nation's credit limit. lawmakers are at a standoff over how to tackle the deficit and prevent the nation from defaulting on it debt. the major sticking point- taxes. president obama would cut the deficit by $4 trillion. to do that the president and the democrats are call for some tax increases. by closing tax loopholes for some businesses. a nonstarter for republicans. >> we're not going to raise taxes in the middle of this horrible economic situation. >> reporter: president obama told lawmakers last night he's prepared to put social security on the table but some democratic lawmakers say no way. >> house democrats aren't supporting any cuts or benefits for social security or medicare. >> reporter: warning of dire consequences of what would happen if it reaches the debt ceiling. president obama will hold a press conference later this morning and will once again meet with congressional leaders. officials

increase. >> that's the big deal. you have harry reid coming up with a plan for democrats. that he says includes $2.7 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years and gives the president the debt ceiling increase that takes him all of the way to 2013. republicans are already saying that those -- his plan includes gimmicks and phantom cuts. so the republicans are coming up with their plan, which would include about $1 trillion in cuts now. it would require the president to come back to congress next year to ask for another debt ceiling increase. >> that's the huge sticking point for the white house. the president has made it clear time and time again that he won't sign a short-term increase. he squashed it at the meeting last night. >> republicans leaders have said that as well. they didn't want any short-term solution to this problem. they changed their tune on this. white house said that speaker boehner needs to stand up and pursue one of the paths that's out there. lot of those same gimmicks in savings from future wars are in the republican budget, the paul ryan budget. george? >
